|The role of the Part-Time Animal Care Technician (ACT) is to provide shelter, safety, and second chances to animals in need. A successful ACT conducts proper care of the animals’ physical and emotional needs enabling them to feel safe, heal, and connect with empathetic humans while awaiting for their forever home.
|$12 – $14 / hour, depending upon experience and education
- Clean and sanitize runs, animal shelters, and overall property daily
- Feed the animals while managing a proper diet as prescribed by Veterinarians
- Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
- Observe, record, and report medical or behavioral concerns
- Assist in maintaining refuge to uphold sanitation, safety and operations
- Unpack, label and stock shelter supplies and donations
- Receive animals to be admitted for shelter care, as requested by Administration
- Maintain proper identification and location records of animals
- Assist doctors, technicians, treatment assistants and other personnel with the administration of medications or with restraint.
- Release animals to their owners as directed by customer service or the shelter manager
- Maintain equipment used to complete job assignments
- Train and work with Volunteers to ensure consistency with animal training practices
- Conduct morning volunteer huddles with volunteer team during each shift. Supervise volunteers in proper handling, safety procedures, and best practices
This position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions:
- Additional duties as necessary and assigned
- Assisting in animal cruelty cases and or seminars
- Knowledge and skill in handling individual animal temperament in a humane manner
- Ability to gain animal confidence when restraining for transport, grooming or treatment
- Knowledge of animal care and nutrition requirements
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle fluctuating priorities and projects
- General knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, administration of oral medications, assessment of change in animal status
- Ability to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals
- Clear communication skills as applied to interaction with team, volunteers, and guests
|EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High school or equivalent education required
- At least 1 year of kennel or animal care experience preferred
- Must have a valid Driver’s License
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must be able to pass drug screening
- Friday, Saturday and Monday Shifts Required
- Typical work hours are between 8:30 AM and 5 P.M.
- Due to the cyclical nature of the industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to meet the needs of the business
- Attendance at training sessions and meetings is required
- Occasional travel is required to area rescues, Alaqua locations and community clinics
|The work environment is outdoors therefore temperatures are decided by mother nature. Noise levels are minimal but are dependent of the animal. Work is primarily outside where dust, hay and other allergens exist. Handling of dangerous animals including dogs, feral cats, pigs, horses, sick animals, and injured species is common. Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with Alaqua Animal Refuge management rules and regulations for safe and effective operation.
- Ability to stand, bend, or kneel for 8 or more hours
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day
- Ability to hear and distinguish changes in pitch
- Posses wide range of motion in your back for twisting etc.
- Ability to work in potentially extreme environmental temperatures
- Possess excellent balance, hand-eye coordination
- Must have good vision, including peripheral vision, fine detail, distance, depth perception, and ability to focus
- Ability to calmly work efficiently and effectively in stressful conditions
- Ability to cope with death
- Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
- Ability to work independently and as part of team
